Awnings have been used for thousands of years in some fashion. They are a passive solar device ( GREEN: NO MATTER WHAT COLOR). Awnings definitely cool down walls and windows by blocking the Sun’s heat as well as reducing damaging Ultra Violet rays. (Think instant shade trees) Patios become more liveable, air conditioners at least 25% more efficient. Fixed frame or retractable awnings allow the outdoors to become extra living spaces, rain or shine. Windows can safely be left open with awnings allowing views and better air circulation. In addition to Solar and rain protection, a retractable awning can become an instant patio cover when desired or quickly rolled back with either a hand crank or motorized version. They create that special changing atmosphere homeowners love to sit under making the outdoors a part of their living area. Hundreds of colors are available which can last ten to twenty years and reflect the feelings you would like surrounding you. There are two basic types for various purposes. Lateral arms, which project out parallel with the ground (used for walking or sitting under, and appropriate for decks or patios), and Vertical arms, which arc out and down on a radius, allowing full coverage when down, or only the blockage desired when rolled partially or fully up. These are typically used for windows, doors, or other openings where heat or passive climate control is variably needed.

Roller Shades

Roller shades are typically canvas, mesh, or clear plastic lowered from a supported top roller either by crank and gear, or by motor and remote control. The roller can be enclosed (hood or cassette) for storage. There is a weight bar at the bottom to keep it smooth and vertical. Sometimes guide cables are placed at the sides, or tracks, to prevent side or sway action from happening in the wind, or to prevent bumping when mounted next to the house or windows.

Drop Shades

Drop Shades differ from Roller Shades in that they are pulled up or let down with a rope and pulleys set-up. The bottom hem contains a weatherproof wooden dowel (about 2 ½” diameter) to stabilize and allow the fabric to roll smoothly to the top. Sometimes small straps are place at the bottom to fasten to railings or decks preventing wind lift or sway.

The typical suspension awning utilizes cables or wire to suspend panels of canvas that travel back and forth when desired for shade and color. They are used anywhere there is a structure or framework to keep the tension needed by the supporting wires. They seem to “float” overhead while letting heat of the day dissipate between the panels. They are beautifully folded when stashed back at either end.

Weather enclosures are usually detachable “walls” of canvas either solid, clear plastic, or mesh, depending on the barrier needed. They can provide wind, moisture or sun protection, as well as privacy around patios, boats, or beach and poolsides.

Shade sails are probably as old as sailing vessels themselves. The Vikings probably utilized extra sails when lying (or looting) in port under a hot sun. They would have stretched them from masts to booms or railings, or any firm structure to cool their decks and companion ways. Halyards would probably have been used to lift the mid areas for shedding rain. Today we make multi-sided “sails” according to the points we can anchor and tension from. These can become colorful free-form shade nearly anywhere. Strong posts can be planted in the ground where necessary to increase the shade area. Most shades are made from mesh fabrics to allow heat to travel upward.

Canopies are generally used as free-standing structures. They are usually steel, wood, or aluminum frames with laced or snap on canvas coverings. Even tents are types of canopies. They may be used to make a grand protected entry (or tunnel) for stylish events, or a shaded area to have a party, park your vehicle or boat at a dock, or next to your home. You wouldn’t consider being in the sun all day at the flea market without a small one. Tent meetings and Big Tops have always presented their “acts” under canopies.
